This review was written by Kathleen Tedsen and Beverlee Rydel, authors of Michigan Vacation from their personal inspection of Deweay Lake Manor

On a knoll overlooking the sparkling waters of Dewey Lake is Dewey Lake Manor, the stately and historic home of your hosts, Barbara and Joseph Phillips. Sitting on more than 18 acre, its the gently sloping, well-groomed grounds offer guests a s weeping view of Dewey Lake. A most picturesque view and a wonderful way to begin any getaway.

The prominent Dewey family built the home in the 1860s. Characteristic of  homes of that period, you will find tall ceilings and elaborate wood workings. Guest rooms tastefully blend antiques with today’s amenities.  Warm area rugs, lace-covered windows and abundantly comfortable beds topped with print quilts provide a charming and relaxing 1800’s ambiance. All rooms include TVs with others offering sitting areas, fireplace and/or Jacuzzi.

Each morning a full breakfast is prepared by Joe, using many local products such as fresh maple syrup, strawberries and other seasonal fruit. One of Joe’s specialties is his generously sized omelets. These delicious morning meals are served in the home’s formal dining room or, weather permitting, outside on the porch where you can listen to their garden waterfall or watch the sunlight shimmer on the lake.

After breakfast, stroll along the lake or on the 17 surrounding acres. You may want to take one of their paddleboats or canoes on a tour of the lake.

Of course you will want to explore this beautiful area of Michigan. Brooklyn is right in the heart of the Irish Hills and boasts more than 50 lakes within a 10-mile radius. There is plenty of great fishing and boating in the warmer months.  In winter, the rolling hills offer some of the best cross-country skiing. Of course, we can’t forget to mention this is one of Michigan’s most scenic areas with lush, rolling hills.  Leisurely drives are a great way to spend a few hours while taking in the sites.

For high-speed action, Brooklyn is also home to the Michigan International Speedway. This very popular racetrack hosts some of the best NASCAR races, including the Spring Cup Series and NASCAR Truck Series.

If shopping is your focus, you won’t be disappointed. Visit the Village of Brooklyn and you’ll experience the warm charm of the “Good Old Days”. Its shopkeepers are happy to welcome you to their historic town. Of course this Brooklyn and its surrounding communities are also known as Antique Alley with many antique filled shops.

Hidden Lake Gardens is another must-see for visitors. Located in nearby Adrian, the gardens were donated to Michigan State University in 1945 by prominent businessman, Harry Fee. Since then it has become a horticulturalist’s dream and is now an amazing collection of colors, scents and beauty throughout the seasons.

The whole family will enjoy Stagecoach Stop USA. Around for more than 40 years, this fun family attraction looks is cowboy town. Walk through this cute western village where shops offer just about anything a tourist family craves… toys, souvenirs and western-style vittles. But be careful out there, we understand there may be some desperados fixin’ for a gunfight!  Don’t be afraid, it’s all in good fun.

After a busy day in this delightful area of Michigan, it’s nice to get back to the welcoming comforts of Dewey Lake Manor. Dewey Lake Manor, a beautiful and relaxing spot in one of Michigan’s most beautiful regions.
