In a quiet neighborhood, just a block
from Huron Street shops and restaurants, is the charming Parish House Inn.
Built in 1893, this Queen Anne styled home originally served as the parsonage
for the First Congregational Church. In 1987 the home was moved to its current
setting with full restoration completed in 1993. Since then, the home’s
interior has been carefully maintained with a distinct Victorian ambiance.
Period furnishings, original wood floors with wood trimmed archways and windows
increase its nostalgic appeal. Of course, Chris has added her own special
touches, which include her little Victorian Christmas corner and original,
hand-painted wall art.
Parish
House is a truly special place for its current innkeepers, Chris and Lance
Mason. The couple married in the home’s lovely backyard overlooking a
meandering section of the Huron River. Today, while both enjoy interacting with
guests, Lance is frequently occupied with other business leaving the daily
operations to Chris. This works out just fine since her education and interests
focus on culinary arts and hospitality.
There
are nine guest rooms of varying sizes. Patchwork quilts, lace-trimmed windows,
period wallpaper and floral prints add to the 1800’s theme. Unique split
baths, which separate sinks from shower and toilet, are distinctive and very
reminiscent of an earlier time. Sterno-burning fireplaces are found in several
rooms. Room 9 is their special Jacuzzi room, which features lovely hand-painted
wall murals. Of course, modern conveniences are included in each room, such as
cable TV (7 rooms with VCR’s), telephones, voice mail and data ports.
Part
of the home’s charm lies in the culinary treats Chris skillfully prepares
each morning. A main dish, created from Michigan products, follows fresh juice,
muffins and scones. Chris is particularly proud of her Michigan Baked Oatmeal
that combines cereal with cherries, almonds, milk and a touch of brown sugar
blended into a flavorful baked casserole.
For
those seeking an escape to this area of Michigan, The Parish House is well located.
Visitors will find it close to Eastern Michigan University as well as
Ypsilanti’s many seasonal jazz and art festivals. It’s also located
in the town’s Historic District. This historic area is part of the Sauk
Trail, used by early-American Indians, trappers and traders almost 200 years
ago. Ask Chris for a copy of the walking tour to enjoy a leisurely stroll
along this historic path.
Whether
for business or pleasure, Parish House will serve as a comfortable retreat
while exploring Ypsilanti and the surrounding communities.
