Without a doubt, one of
Michigan’s most magnificent sights, day or night, is the Mackinac Bridge.
It’s a wonder of engineering. To be able to truly enjoy its craftsmanship
without fighting crowds or sitting in traffic is a real reward. Cottage on the
Straits offers that opportunity. Not only is the view spectacular, but the
cottage is pretty darn nice too!
This six room, 40-50 year
old home rests on a quiet road along the shores of Lake Michigan and offers a truly
picture perfect view of the Bridge. A furnished wood deck extending from the
side entrance makes a great spot to chat with friends or family while enjoying
the view. At this end of Lake Michigan the water is clear, cool and a little
rocky.
At the time of our visit,
we noted the exterior of the home facing the lake did show some wear. However,
the home’s interior was very pleasant. The fun, 1940s soda shop
atmosphere in the kitchen and tastefully selected antiques and nautical accents
create a real nostalgic, homey ambiance.
The clean and bright, red
and white 1940s styled kitchen has period memorabilia and today’s
amenities, including microwave. To the left you’ll enter the living room
with contemporary blue sofa and recliners comfortably placed around the
fireplace. Throw rugs cover hardwood floors. The back of the living room has
been converted into a sitting area furnished with white wicker. To the side,
the formal dining room stands a cabinet stocked with many treasures including
1950/1960 model cars along with new books titles and some classics, like Nancy Drew.
The one bedroom is bright
and cheerful with queen size bed covered with a lovely pastel quilt and
surrounded by white wood and light blue accents. Additional sleeping
arrangements include a pullout Murphy bed, queen size sleeper sofa and a twin
bed in the enclosed rear porch. A small but functional full size bathroom
contains a tub/shower.
Cottage on the Straits is
minutes from the center of St. Ignace and a short drive to the Bridge, Mackinaw
Island, Mackinac City, casinos, shopping and more. It’s a central
location to enjoy the multitude of things the region has to offer. If
you’re looking for a private vacation in a great location with your own
view of the Mackinac Bridge, the reasonably priced Cottage on the Straits is a
nice choice.
