Built in 1928 as a wedding gift, the elegant and inviting Dutch Colonial Inn is a lovely reminder of what attracts visitors to the Dutch community of Holland. Located in a residential section of the city, this 8,400 sq. ft. home is tastefully styled and carefully maintained with just the right touch of hominess to make your stay comfortable.

Bob and Pat Elenbaas are certainly part of what make the Dutch Colonial Inn one of Holland’s most popular bed and breakfasts. Gracious and caring, the Elenbaas’ and their staff are committed to maintaining a welcoming environment. Their motto “Our Home is Your Home” shows in their attitude and manner.

We visited each of the inn’s four guest rooms and were immediately impressed with their spacious, tastefully decorated interiors. Light floral prints, family heirlooms, antiques and lace accents combine with inviting colors of country blue and cream or dusty rose and raspberry to create a relaxed, calming atmosphere.

One of our favorite rooms is the Master Suite. Elegantly romantic, its lace trimmed, open canopy queen bed sets the mood. A gas-log fireplace, sitting area and private bath with double whirlpool tub add a special touch. Another favorite is their 700 sq. ft., two-level loft, Tulip Suite, featuring a tall chalet ceiling. The first floor is brightly furnished in white wicker with a gas-log fireplace adding its warm glow.  Other amenities include a full entertainment center with cable TV and stereo. A stairway leads to the upstairs loft with king size bed and additional bath featuring a double whirlpool tub. This suite is particularly appealing for those seeking more space and privacy.

Enhancing the Dutch Colonial’s appeal is the upstairs Common Room. Its  open area is great for mingling with others. A large, cherry wood dining table and tasteful collection of furniture and antiques along with a welcoming fireplace create a tranquil atmosphere. The room also offers a small kitchen.

Guests may prefer to relax in the elegant yet comfortably styled main floor living room with its impressive array of antiques including Bob and Pat’s special collection of Ruby Flash King’s Crown Thumbprint glassware. Off the living room is the cheery sunroom perfect for enjoying a little quiet time.

Certainly, we cannot overlook the delicious breakfasts that are an important part of the Dutch Colonial experience. Breakfasts may be brought to your door or, if you’d like to mingle, served in the formal dining room. Brightened by surrounding windows, touched by lace, fresh flowers and warmed by the deep cherry wood dining table, it’s a lovely spot to begin your day.

Breakfast always starts with a fresh fruit cup (and a dollop of creamy yogurt), juices and freshly baked muffins. Main course specialties include quiche, ham and egg casseroles or French toast. Their mouth-watering fresh baked desserts include their very popular cranberry crumble cake and Swedish Kringle (a light almond pastry).

After your delicious breakfast, get ready for a full day of fun exploring this wonderful area of Michigan.  Holland is best known for its May Tulip Festival. The community nurtures its incredible collection of these brilliant perennials to ensure their colorful blooms greet visitors as the festival begins. Parades, live entertainment (including traditional Dutch dances) and other events add to the celebratory atmosphere.

Throughout the year, Windmill Island continues to be a popular visitor’s stop with its 235-year-old Dutch windmill and more than 36 acres of gardens. A short drive away is picturesque, Saugatuck. Saugatuck’s nostalgic downtown area is noted for its unique variety of gift shops, many offering the work of area artisans.

The Dutch Colonial Inn is a very nice choice for those seeking a welcoming respite from daily life while enjoying the adventures and beauty along Michigan’s west shore. It’s nice to know that Pat, Bob and their friendly staff are there to welcome you home.
